Learn to knit
A great place to start is your local knitting/yarn shop. They will have classes
to get you hat-making in days. Or buy a great knitting book and teach yourself.
We recommend
Stitch 'n Bitch by Debbie Stoller.

The Fastest Hat Around:
Use chunky yarn (Thick and Quick types)
Size 13 needles (9.0mm)
-
CO (cast on) 25 stitches (see internet sites above)
-
K (knit) stitch like a crazy person
-
When your piece gets to be between 10 and 15 inches long (or so):
BO (Bind off)
-
Cut a nice long tail and pull it through your last stitch
-
Thread a yarn needle and blanket stitch (or whatever you’d like, it won’t show if
it’s the same yarn color) the top and down the side
-
Turn inside-out (now it’s the right-side) and mail to toasty noggins!
This is a great "first hat" to learn to knit with. You can gauge the size while
you knit, try new stitches and have fun with it, then make it into a very unique
hat.
Knitting in the round is the best way to make a wonderful hat -- don’t let it intimidate
you -- a knitter never looks as cool as when she’s got 5 double pointed needles
flying.
